Beautify Your Yard Shrub Maintenance Tips

Amy Newcomer • Sep 05, 2022

There is nothing quite like a shrub to add some flair to your home’s landscaping. It doesn’t hurt that these attractive plants add privacy to make you feel more comfortable at home. However, just because they are a stylish addition to your yard does not mean that they are all fun; you still need to take care of them like any other living plant. Fortunately, there are three tips to remember so you can properly maintain your shrubs and keep them looking beautiful.

1. Get the Right Tools

There are a few different gardening tools that you should have on hand to properly care for your shrubs. Some examples of gear that you don’t want to skip include electric or gas trimmers, pruners, manual trimmers and high-quality loppers. While loppers are required for larger and thicker shrubs, some sturdy pruning shears will be more than enough to properly trim smaller branches, so keep those on hand, as well.

You will also want to make sure that you have a pair of protective gardening gloves. Landscaping of any kind can lead to injuries, but pruning shrubs can be a particularly complicated situation. You may end up with some unpleasant cuts and scrapes if you are not careful to get the heaviest-duty gloves that you can find.

2. Know Your Shrubs

Did you know that there are different varieties of shrubs? There are, and they all require unique care. If you still haven’t picked out your shrubs, take some time to research what kinds are the easiest to care for throughout the year. If you already have some shrubs growing in your yard, you will still need to educate yourself regarding the specific maintenance needs of the variations that are present. That way, you will know what upkeep is involved rather than trying to guess what your plants need.

3. Consider Professional Help

The fact is that, in many cases, shrub care is just too complicated and time-consuming to handle by yourself. You also may quickly find that you are just not that interested in doing the research necessary to properly tend to these lovely plants. In cases such as these, a seasoned and knowledgeable landscaping professional can assist you. A landscaper will understand exactly what your shrubs need to stay healthy and gorgeous for years to come, and your time will no longer be wasted trying to manage their care throughout the year.

Armed with these tips, you will now be able to make sure that you have some of the most stunning shrubs on your block for years to come. Maybe you will want to share some of these tips with your neighbors so they can keep up with your masterful decorating!

As time goes by, the public is becoming progressively more conscious about how their lifestyle impacts the health and wellbeing of the planet. For this reason (and more), eco-friendly homes have become more common. However, just because the home you purchased wasn’t a “green” home, that doesn’t mean you can’t make some eco-friendly improvements. During construction, try to stick to sustainable materials local to your region. You could also install some brand-new energy-efficient appliances and/or solar panels and keep your HVAC system well-maintained and running as efficiently as possible. Be sure to get rid of your old lightbulbs and invest in some energy-efficient bulbs instead. Contact us for a guide on eco-friendly home improvement.

In today’s hyper-connected world, electronics are crucial for pretty much every type of home. What is unnecessary, however, is a tangled mess of cables in every room of your house. Take time to rethink all the piles of wires throughout your home. You could investigate simple cable management options like fasteners, USB charging stations, and Velcro strips to keep cords tidier. You can also use cable storage boxes that not only help you hide unsightly cords, but also provide additional physical protection for your surge protectors and extension boxes. For things like entertainment centers, it may be worth investigating hidden cord systems in your walls for permanent electronic fixtures in your home. Before you list your home, remember that potential buyers are going to be impacted by their first impression, and no one wants to purchase a house with a worn-down, unappealing image. Landscaping is a simple way to give your home’s overall curb appeal a huge facelift. Try adding height and curves into your landscaping or installing a new irrigation system. It’s also possible to incorporate different pathways into the design, constructed from a material of your choice—brick, colorful concrete, or even stone and moss. Whatever you choose, a fresh landscape can take your home off the market in a snap. Contact us for more landscaping advice before putting your home on the market.

Clean gutters ensure that rainwater drains away from your home effectively. If your gutters become clogged or broken, you could experience expensive water damage in many areas of your home. Take time to regularly check and clean your gutters throughout the year, especially at the beginning of winter when they may be full of fallen leaves. Check for broken brackets and cracks in the gutter troughs. You can also explore gutter protection options, such as sheathing that allows water to enter your gutters while keeping out debris. Contact us if you have any questions or concerns about preserving or improving your home’s gutter system.
